Reverend Carla Dietz
Worship Style - Traditional community church
Many years ago, David participated in a multi-choir concert at this church, and about 50 years ago, Denise was a flower girl at a wedding here as well. So, we decided to make a return visit.
Rev. Dietz's sermon was entitled, "Living Service." Her sermon was based on Matthew 23:1-12. This is the Scripture where Jesus warns the crowd against hypocrisy, and where He says, "The greatest among you will be your servant. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted." She began by discussing leadership styles, using Pope Francis as an example, and suggesting that he is not like previous popes in that he is inciting conversation. She described a good leader as having or being the following: 1. vision, 2. passion, 3. decision maker, 4. team builder, and 5. character.
Rev. Dietz further pointed out how Jesus called out the Pharisees and how "they love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and to be called 'Rabbi' by others." She explained what He meant by, "They make their phylacteries wide and the tassels on their garments long..." The phylacteries were large boxes they wore on their heads to remember the laws. She indicated that it is not good leadership if leaders give challenges to people but don't expect it of themselves. This is what Jesus had to say, "So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach."
Finally, she stated that Jesus lived His entire adult life in service to others - "That was His mojo."
