Pastor Zach Kerzee
Worship Style - Unconventional Methodist
We had the supreme privilege of attending the very first worship service of Simple Church. This is a church planting by the New England Conference of the United Methodist Church. It was designed to fill a void when the Grafton United Methodist Church was closed, and it is housed in the parsonage of the Grafton UMC. The location of this parsonage is amazing! It sits high in the town of Grafton and has a spectacular view of the city of Worcester. The view this particular night was absolutely fantastic, and we were dining outdoors. The concept of this church is to have a simple meal together - to break bread and share our faith. "A church doesn't need a big building with a big steeple and a fellowship hall. A church doesn't need pews. What if we stripped away all of that stuff and made it more simple? What if church was a group of people who met around a table, ate good food, and asked questions that matter?" Pastor Zach has done a tremendous job of connecting with neighbors and people who were unchurched but seeking. To learn more about Simple Church check out www.simpleumc.com.
Pastor Zach is an extremely passionate and inspired Christ follower. He greeted us with excitement and joy. We were quickly introduced to other friends and invited to join the others in the field in the back of the house. The tables were set and adorned with white lights. Everything was beautiful. We began with an introduction by Pastor Zach, we formed a circle, and then we served each other communion. We then helped ourselves to dinner of a delicious homemade vegetable soup and salads prepared by those attending. Pastor Zach read a passage of Scripture, led us in song on his guitar, posed a question, and asked us to introduce ourselves to each other at our table (there were approximately 40 people in attendance, 8 at our table) and to discuss the question. The diversity at our table was so impressive. There was a pastor from another church who was looking for the opportunity to worship instead of leading worship, a family of three who had not been to church in a while, a gentleman who had been raised in church as a child but had strayed away and had not been back for many years, a woman who had attended the now closed church, and us. We had a very lively and authentic discussion. Before we knew it, Pastor Zach was closing the service, and it was time to say goodbye.
Clearly, Jesus was present and pleased with the start of this new church. We pray that He continues to bless Pastor Zach as he reaches out to spread the Gospel.
