Pastor Marty Holman
Worship Style - Contemporary
This was our first movie theater church experience. Fellowship Church originally began in Holden but recently sold their building and is now holding their services at Showcase North Cinemas in Worcester, MA. Shortly upon our arrival, we were warmly greeted by Pastor Marty and had the unusual opportunity to discuss his church and our pilgrimage before the service started. We were able to learn about the beginnings of the church and how it came to be at the theater. A great deal of work took place prior to our arrival in transforming the theater into a sanctuary.
Pastor Marty's sermon was entitled, "Players Gonna Play." The Scripture he was basing his sermon on was 1Peter 5:1-10. He made the comparison between a sports team and the body of Christ. The coach of our team is the Shepherd who cares for His flock, nurturing and protecting and feeding us the Word. Not unlike caring for a newborn, Pastor Marty indicated that the Shepherd also cleans up the "spiritual crude." Finally, the Shepherd, like a good coach, leads by His own good example and exalts you at the proper time. 1Peter 5:6-7 tells us, "Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you."
Pastor Marty then went on to describe a mature team player of the church. This was based on 1Timothy 3. Here we are told about the necessary qualifications: above reproach, faithful to spouse, exercises self-control, lives wisely, good reputation, has guests in their homes, able to teach, not a heavy drinker, not violent, not a new believer. We were challenged to grow up in our faith. We can not remain "spiritual kids."
